My husband, who worked in the motor trade had taken the mickey out of me for years because he passed his test first time was relieved that when we went out now he didn't have to be the designated driver, he could now have a drink.

We set out looking for cheap car insurance as I wanted to have my own insurance and not be a second driver. This seemed to be proving impossible but as he worked in the motor trade he had a few contacts and I eventually got it as cheap as I possibly could and could legally drive my car all on my own.

There was no stopping me, I was driving everywhere but never in the dark, for some reason I was petrified of being in control of a car while it was dark. it seemed stupid but I couldn't help the way I felt.

That is, until we had tickets for a band we had wanted to see for years and it was too far away to walk. I was convinced that it would be OK and I agreed to drive.

We went to the theatre to watch the band and had a fantastic night and then the drive home began. I was so nervous and my leg wouldn't stop shaking. Back in our road I had to reverse the car up the drive. My husband tried to guide me but I got confused and, crunch, I hit the wall. Oh, what a mess.

I didn't want to claim on the insurance so decided if we could hire a skip that was cheap we could clear up and widen the drive at the same time. being in the motor trade had its benefits and I had my car fixed at cost price and never needed to claim, but it taught me a lesson. Now I never drive after 7pm in the winter and 9pm in the summer. I will one day but only when I am ready. My husband is back to being designated driver, it serves him right, he should have guided me better and this would never have happened.
